Remember that network with the cheerful singing frog as its mascot? The one that brought us shows like Smallville, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel? Yes, I’m talking about The WB, the network that merged with UPN to become The CW only a year and a half ago. Well, thanks to the wonders of the internet, they may be making a comeback.
No doubt inspired by things like iTunes, hulu.com, and major networks offering shows for free online, it’s been announced that The WB is planning to launch a website that will stream full episodes of shows that it aired back in its heyday, which may also feature new and original series exclusive to the web. This won’t cost viewers a thing, but unskippable ads will be included in all of the shows. It is not yet known if series that aired on the network but weren’t produced by it will be included, such as Dawson’s Creek (although let’ hope they at least bring that back, because anything with Katie Holmes is okay in my book). It’s also unconfirmed as to whether or not series produced by the WB but airing on The CW will be featured.
This news is yet more proof that television and the internet are quickly becoming one and the same. Stuff like this shows that we really are heading into a new age of TV, and is also a sign that the Writers Guild of America was wise to demand what they did during the strike. What an age we live in.
