The first Blockbuster of the year hits the big screen today - are you as psyched as I am?
I'm turning the geek-boosters up to full today, as Iron Man finally hits the big screen today! Based on Marvel's hit comic book series and starring Robert Downy Jr. it's officially the start of SUMMER MOVIE SEASON!
In case you've been living under a rock or overpass, more trailers have been released for Iron Man than anything in recent memory - and it's worked to spur movie goers into a frothing frenzy already.
Early reviews have been pouring in and they're unanimous - Iron Man is set to be THE BEST comic-book movie ever. Better than Spider-man 2, the previous benchmark.
Stay tuned Monday to see my full review... because I've already got MY tickets. Do you?
For any regular reader of Beer.com, and my movie reviews in particular, you know well enough that I can't stay away from a superhero movie. Even SHITTY ones like Ghost Rider, or Daredevil. Well apparently it's an illness... one that's contagious apparently, as everyone and their dog went to see Iron Man this weekend - $100.7 MILLION DOLLARS worth of people opening weekend alone.
With an average ticket price of $12 that's over 8 MILLION people that went to the theater this weekend to see Robert Downey Jr., Gwenyth Paltrow, Terrance Howard, and Jeff Bridges in Iron Man. And, aside from personal bias, I can't blame each and every one of those 8 Million people who got off their fat asses and opened their wallets. Iron Man is a GREAT movie.
Previously Spider-Man 2 was the benchmark for comic-to-movie transitions, but no more; Iron Man is the new gold standard for formulas for WIN. And Copious amounts of WIN it is. Iron Man mixes the perfect amounts of excellent casting, humor, and action, as well as keeping the pacing at a point where the previous curse of tedious origin stories is all together absent.
Director John Favreau does an amazing job, mixing the "HOLY SHIT" action moments with the laughs, which has to be credited to Robert Downey Jr. as well. He makes the PERFECT Tony Stark - he brings his award-winning talent and combines it with his own personal demons that Tony himself deals with to create the perfect character. Truly the best adaptation of a comic book character to real-life since Hugh Jackman first popped the claws as Wolverine. RDJr. creates a charismatic yet tormented character - I honestly can't say enough about how well he is for this role.
You deserve it to yourself to go see this movie. Fan of the genre, fan of the comics, fan of the actors, or not, go see this movie! Marvel has struck solid gold with Iron Man, look forward to a sequel in 2010 as well!
VERDICT: SEE IT
