Welcome to "The Shrink is In", your forum for everything and anything about being a guy.
Every week I'll bring you insights into many of the issues, problems, and quirks about being a man in today's world. We'll also talk to celebrities, heroes, and icons with the goal of better understanding what goes on inside a man's mind.
A big part of this new feature is your opportunity to interact with me; so send me your questions and ramblings or thoughts on anything you're going through right now and I answer them.
As a trained therapist who specializes in working with men, I've worked with hundreds of guys of all ages and I'll bring much of what I experience in my daily practice into this column. I'll always give you the straight goods, raw and unpolished and I'll be that voice that will challenge you to live the life that right now you're only dreaming about.
So, let's get this party started by looking at the state of being a guy today. If I take a cross-section of everything I see and hear? I have to be honest with you? We're fucked. Men are scrambling to better understand their relationships, their work, their families, money and sex. Generally speaking we're rudderless, careening through our lives in constant full bore drifting.
Look around you.
How many man-boys do you see? You know the type I'm talking about? They're men on the outside and on the inside they act like twelve year olds. Makes me think of Tom Hanks in Big. I see grown men drooling over 60 flat screen TVs the same way my ten year old drools over a new skate deck. No wonder GPS systems are so popular with men. For the first time in our lives there's a useful little machine that tells us where we are and where the fuck we're going.
From The Rolling Stones to Fall Out Boy? Barry Bonds to Michael Vicks, George Bush to Hugo Chavez, the vast majority of men are in a suspended state of narcissistic youth adoration which has them disconnected from themselves, their relationships and the planet at large. We're on a crash course gentlemen and there's no one to stop us. Certainly not women? They've given up on us a long time ago.
It's said that the first child a woman has is her husband.
It's time to grow up guys.
Don't believe me? Then let me hear from you.
