Folks drop by Monastery in Mesa to enjoy an outdoor barbecue atmosphere and play sand volleyball. The Monastery STATS: 4810 E. McKellips Road, Mesa. (480) 474-4477. No cover. HOURS: 11 a.m.-midnight Sundays-Thursdays. 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. THE LOOK: It's essentially a big back yard with two sand volleyball courts, two pingpong tables, two horseshoe pits and barbeque grills. There's even a stage for live music. Billiards and foosball inside. BEER AND WINE ONLY: And margaritas out of a machine. ATMOSPHERE: Like a big ol' barbecue at your cool buddy's house. All ages, all shapes and all types of people. Children are welcome during the day, but after 8 p.m. it's adults only. BRING FIDO: But make sure he's on a leash and reads the "doggie rules" posted at doggie eye-level. SAFETY FIRST: Free taxi ride home available if you need it. Monastery will even pay for the cab ride back to your car in the morning. OVERHEARD IN THE LADIES' ROOM: "I like this place. We should come to Mesa more often." Now that's a compliment.
