Appearance:
Burnished brownish colored ale with burgundy highlights. Almond colored collar of foam. Carbonation is of mixed sized bubbles, though it provides a fine lacing of the glass.
Smell:
Soft roast and creamy chocolate notes gently buffet the nose appealingly.
Taste:
Medium bodied ale. On the palate, chocolate, roast and an undercurrent of hop bitterness press firmly on the tongue. Middle has hop bitterness to the fore, with chocolate and malt in support. A smooth, creamy finish features chocolate and hops in a synchronized two-step across the palate. Some dryness developing late.
Notes:
CAMRA's Champion Old Ale of Britain 1992/93 and Supreme Champion Beer of Britain 1992/93. Bottle conditioned, therefore yeast sediment in the bottle. For a clear beer, pour carefully in one go, leaving about an inch of yeast and beer in the bottle. Real ale in a bottle.
